The Hour of Power – Listening to the Holy Spirit

How to transform your boring day as a Catholic Priest, Youth Minister, Director of Religious Education, or Parish Employee

Blue dome on Greece Church

The Hour of Power

Before I can unveil this hour of power we must first start with the pre-game power.  That would be time spent before the Blessed Sacrament, at Mass, and Scripture.  You have to get the power from the Lord or else where does it come from?

Now onto the Jason Buck Hour of Power.

Most days on the job either drag on or are over and nothing was accomplished.  Nothing that you really wanted to accomplish.

After morning mass and prayers, but before your first scheduled appointment take time to listen to the Holy Spirits promptings.  Yes, before email, the newspaper, the hospital, etc.

Take 1 hour to be even more open to what the Lord has in store for you.

But Jason you are so unproductive…I have so much to do.

I agree, but sometimes everything we think we have to do gets in the way of what the Lord has for us to do.

Ask the Lord to especially open your heart to His will.  Maybe that is being available to confession after Mass, or cleaning the Church.  Maybe it means spend extra time in prayer or visiting someone’s friend who you just found out was dying.

Maybe it means talking to someone who randomly showed up in your life, or making an impromptu phone call, or planning something special for the youth group.

But Jason, I am always listening to the Lord.

I hear you…But sometimes a little extra discipline helps form us and open our hearts to what He has in store for us.

Instead of planning the day away, take time to ask the Lord what His plan is for the day.

Living with Our Eyes on Christ

The Last Supper

Recently I was given the book To Whom Shall We Go? Lessons from the Apostle Peter written by Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan.  Like many Catholics my bookshelves are filled with pious books that continue to stack up and my reading list grows.  However, I was given the book by another person a week later, so I thought maybe I should make this a priority.

Upon opening the book Archbishop Dolan sets the stage for a marvelous spiritual adventure.  I couldn’t put the book down.  The Archbishop uses funny stories, authentic teaching, short chapters (in big print), and practical spiritual advice.  His simple approach to helping the reader see Christ face to face and realize that in an ever changing world if we only keep our eyes on the Lord, the Lord will keep us steady.

I would recommend this book to anyone with little time who want to make drastic improvements in their prayer life.  If you are looking for a critical exegesis on St. Peter look elsewhere.

“All for Thee, Most Sacred heart of Jesus.  Sacred heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in Thee.  Most sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on me, a sinner.”

Youth Group – Young Adult – Boy Scouts

Youth Group - As a youth minister take each chapter of the book and use it as a 9 week lesson plan.  Each chapter contains enough to offer a teaching.  Youth long for intimate experiences with Jesus Christ and this book will give you a simple guideline to help them.

Young Adult Group
- This book could work as a theme for the year.  It is relatively low cost and the chapters could give great starting points to plan talks.  The book lends itself to follow up discussion that could be facilitated through an email newsletter.

Catholic Boy Scout Troop – Chapter 7 “Put Out into the Deep” would create good discussion for the religious award.

What to do when you want to Quit

Jesus I trust in You

Long, unappreciated days come when you are working in parish ministry.  Volunteers forget to come, youth never say thank you, Father forgets your name, and there is no end in sight.

These are the days when you think, “I’m done!”

We have all been there.  Not just once, but many times.  I believe it comes even more when working in the Catholic Church due to the spiritual work that is taking place.  The Catholic Church can be a tough place to work.  Fulfilling the will of God is always hard in everyone’s life.

5 Simple Remedies When You Want to Stop Ministering

-Take a Break – Just take a day off, an hour, 5 minutes and relax.  Everything will be there when you come back.  The weight of the world is not on your shoulders.  The Lord is carrying the cross with you.

-Identify the Problem – Take a look at your activities, work, and ministry and target the areas with the most stress.  Instead of allowing these to be placed under the rug, face them.

-Pray - Ask the Lord for help and guidance.  Make Him your partner in everything you do.  Don’t allow a decision to be made without counsel.

-The Mission – What is your mission?  What is your purpose?  This must be clear and those who work with you must be on board.  If not, reevaluate you goals, and share them.  Maybe this means moving to another ministry, parish, or group.  Or cultivate your team to be on the same mission as you.

-Share – Elicit some feedback from those you minister to and with.  Tell them what you are thinking and you will find out that you probably are doing a great job.  Or a reality check will come and it will be a clear sign that your gifts and talents may be best used somewhere else.

Remember, Calvary is a big hill to climb, but at the top is the prize.

What do you do when you want to quit working for the Catholic Church?

Following the Lord’s Will in Ministry

Salsburg0066The great disparity between our wills and God’s will has caused turmoil for man since original sin.  It sounds so easy to follow the Lord, but when the first crossroad appears before us we often turn away in despair.

On the road to Heaven what are the signs turning us away?

Just give in a little bit…It’s good for you to try.
God’s way isn’t really the best way.
Laziness and fear.
Distractions, idols, and gimmicks

When planning a campaign, parish program, youth group evening, etc begin first with the Lord.  Don’t allow the onslaught of deception from the world drive you off course.  Worldly values are like a stereo that must be turned off.

Look to the Lord’s Signs

The Sacraments, Adoration, Scripture, and the Rosary
The Lives of the Saints
Examples of holy men and women in your diocese
The Writings of the Pope
The Fruits of the Holy Spirit

It is through the Lord that we are feed, nourished, and prepared for ministry.  If what we do is not in the Lord’s name, who are we accomplishing it for?

The most success in parish ministry will come from prayer.  Faith combined with our reason will produce the results that are needed.

Stop worrying, getting distracted, ministering half-heartily, and giving up.  Turn off and Turn God ON!
