Living with Our Eyes on Christ
Jan 25th
Recently I was given the book To Whom Shall We Go? Lessons from the Apostle Peter written by Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan. Like many Catholics my bookshelves are filled with pious books that continue to stack up and my reading list grows. However, I was given the book by another person a week later, so I thought maybe I should make this a priority.
Upon opening the book Archbishop Dolan sets the stage for a marvelous spiritual adventure. I couldn’t put the book down. The Archbishop uses funny stories, authentic teaching, short chapters (in big print), and practical spiritual advice. His simple approach to helping the reader see Christ face to face and realize that in an ever changing world if we only keep our eyes on the Lord, the Lord will keep us steady.
I would recommend this book to anyone with little time who want to make drastic improvements in their prayer life. If you are looking for a critical exegesis on St. Peter look elsewhere.
“All for Thee, Most Sacred heart of Jesus. Sacred heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in Thee. Most sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
Youth Group – Young Adult – Boy Scouts
Youth Group - As a youth minister take each chapter of the book and use it as a 9 week lesson plan. Each chapter contains enough to offer a teaching. Youth long for intimate experiences with Jesus Christ and this book will give you a simple guideline to help them.
Young Adult Group - This book could work as a theme for the year. It is relatively low cost and the chapters could give great starting points to plan talks. The book lends itself to follow up discussion that could be facilitated through an email newsletter.
Catholic Boy Scout Troop – Chapter 7 “Put Out into the Deep” would create good discussion for the religious award.

Great Power in the Holy Name of Jesus
Jan 24th
Tan Publishers have some of the best Catholic books. Have you ever held in your hand one of their small publications that was reprinted from some obscure saint 300 years ago and it still has relevance today?
I was given a book of their books which I am slowly going through. Prayer cards falling out, covers folded over, and underlined words, but the substance is still authentic Catholic teaching.
In The Wonders of the Holy Name Father Paul O’Sullivan, O.P. outlines the power in the name of Jesus. In such turbulent times the best aid we can send our brothers is Jesus.
Pope Gregory X in 1274 called on all Bishops and priest to promote the frequent repetition of the Holy Name of Jesus. They thought this was the most effective way to save society from the plots of the devil. Through the preaching of Dominicans and Franciscan brothers the enemies of the Church were overthrown.
When we say, “Jesus,”
- We offer God the merits of the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ.
- We offer God the Masses being celebrated throughout the world.
- We pray for the holy souls in purgatory thus relieving and liberating their awful pains.
- We offer an act of perfect love
- Jesus saves us from evils and delivers us from the snares of the devil.
- Our souls our filled with peace and joy.
- We are given strength from Heaven to carry out the will of The Father.
This simple practice of reciting the name of Jesus can be carried out throughout the day. What may seem like a simple task will become a habit of love that will lead us to Heaven.

Novena Prayer to St. Joseph, Protector of the Innocents
Dec 20th
(This novena is to be said for the nine days from December 19 until December 28, the Feast of the Holy Innocents)
O Holy St. Joseph, Foster Father of the Savior of the world! It was your obedience to the message of an angel in the middle of a dark night in Palestine that caused you to take action at a critical moment to save the life of the Christ Child. Your quick action made it possible for us all to “have life and have it to the full” (John 10:10).
Hear our prayer now as we intercede with you for a new class of innocents, the unborn children, who will be sacrificed needlessly and cruelly by abortion. Please save them from harm. Please give us strength of soul and firm conviction to turn away from all forms of sin and to treasure the sanctity of all human life, from conception to natural death.
O St. Joseph, protector of the Innocents, pray for us who have recourse to thee!
Holy Mother Mary, intercede for us!
Amen.

Exorcism Blessing for Candles
Dec 17th
Exorcism Blessing for Candles
(Priest vests in surplice and purple stole)
(In order to increase the power of the original blessing for candles, the author has added text from other official Church exorcism blessings for sacramentals)
P. Our help is in the name of the Lord.
R. Who made heaven and earth.
P: The Lord be with you.
R: May He also be with you.
P: O candles, I exorcise you in the name of God (+) the Father Almighty, in the name of Jesus (+) Christ his Son, our Lord, and in the name of the Holy (+) Spirit. May God uproot and cast out from these objects, all power of the devil, all attacks of the unclean spirit, and all deceptions of Satan, so that they may bring health of mind and body to all who use them. We ask this through the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is coming to judge both the living and the dead and the world by fire.
R: Amen
P: Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, light of everlasting life, you have given us candles to dispel the darkness. We humbly implore you now to bless (+) these candles at our lowly request, and hallow (+) them by the light of your grace. By the power of the Holy (+) Cross, endow them with a heavenly blessing. May the blessing they receive be so powerful that, wherever they are placed or lighted, the princes of darkness shall flee in fear, along with all their legions, and never more dare to disturb those who serve you, the almighty God. Let the entire building in which these candles are kept, be free from the power of the adversary, and be defended from the snares of the enemy. Grant we pray, that those who will use these candles may be protected from every assault of the evil spirit, and be safeguarded from all danger. Through Christ our Lord.
R: Amen.
